Sheridan Gundry wins Excellence in Engineering Journalism Award
24 November 2010
Gisborne writer Sheridan Gundry is the winner of the Award for Excellence in Engineering Journalism 2010.
In a series of articles in the Gisborne Herald, Sheridan was able to explain to the public the nature and extent of a large-scale wastewater treatment design and construction project for the local district council. The concerns of the community about the impact of partly treated effluent on the amenity value of local receiving waters were recognised. Clear information was given to explain what citizens could expect to see happening as the construction phase of the project progressed, and what the long-term benefits to the community would be.
The award recognises that the articles successfully communicated to the community an engineering issue, wastewater treatment - which is not a fashionable but nonetheless important news subject. The lead engineers and their roles were clearly identified and their own words used to explain the work in progress where possible without resorting to technical jargon. The articles were illustrated by appropriate photographs showing what was happening within the project boundaries. Sheridan also introduced a strong human interest element into her stories by reporting on the visit of the retired engineers who had been responsible for the previous scheme.
Ms Gundry was presented with her award at a gala dinner in Wellington, hosted by Linda Clark and attended by more than 350 guests.
Initiated in 2005, the New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards are the premier awards for the engineering professionals of New Zealand. The awards are presented in two major areas: Awards Recognising People, that recognise leadership, innovation, entrepreneurship and our young engineers; and Project and Product Awards, that recognise achievement in the various industry areas, together with a Supreme Award for the best of the Project and Product winners.
